28 Sep IT ALREADY SMELLS LIKE A FAIR CORPUS
Summer is almost here and with it, the fair of our magnificent city, “El Corpus”.
If you are one of those who love to party, have a good time and enjoy the customs of your new city, you cannot miss an event as characteristic as this one.
Today we explain the origin of this festival and what you can do throughout its week-long duration.
This festival varies its date depending on when Holy Week took place. Every year we can enjoy different art festivals, exhibitions, bullfighting parties, elegant horse-drawn carriages strolling through the city center and as is typical of the first Saturday of the fair, the “alumbrao” will be lit at 12 at night with a great fireworks show.
Origin of Corpus Christi
It was the Catholic Monarchs who implanted this tradition in our land, but its origin comes from Belgium, where at the beginning of the 13th century, Juliana de Cornillón had the idea of setting up a day to honor the Body and Blood of Christ – Corpus Christi Day. Christi.
Activities during Corpus Christi
In Plaza Bib-Rambla and throughout the week we can enjoy this exhibition of vignettes and small “poems” of five verses called coplillas that in an ironic and humorous tone try to explain different current situations in the city or the country.
The Tarasca
We will be able to enjoy one of the strangest and most difficult to explain traditions, “La Tarasca”.
Enjoyed by adults and children, this is a procession of a mythological figure with the appearance of a dragon and a woman, they say wearing what is trendy during the year, although finally their outfit ends up being criticized by almost all Granadans; so much so that we have an expression that proclaims “you are dressed worse than the Tarascan.”
This procession is also followed by a retinue of giants and big heads that the little ones adore.
Corpus Christi Procession
It is the most important procession of the week that appears next to the custody of the Holy Sacrament. This year they occur on Thursday, June 20, preceded again by La Tarasca and followed by parishes, brotherhoods, etc.
The Granada Fair
Located on the outskirts of the city, the Granada fair is a traditional Andalusian fair, which everyone from the oldest to the youngest can enjoy, night and day.
At the venue you can enjoy the attractions, the booths, flamenco, and the good food and drinks typical of this festival. Don’t miss the rebujito, the orujo, the montaditos or the well-served portions while you dance sevillanas or any other flamenco style.
